About Junchang Lu
Born in China, lives and works in Germany
Graduated from Beijing Forestry University in 2009 with the major of Industry Design, he started his career in Caibai Jewelry, a local jewelry brand of Beijing, as a commercial jewelry designer. Inspired by the exhibition “10 years Re: Jewellry” which was organized by Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2012, Junchang started his deeper thinking of the true meaning of jewelry, what is jewelry? What can be a jewelry piece for? Should the preciousness of the material be a certain factor to a jewelry piece?
With these questions in mind, he made the turnaround into his contemporary jewelry journey by entering Alchimia Contemporary Jewelry School in Florence for the MFA program in 2016. Tutored by Jorge Manilla and Lucy Sarnerl, he developed his projects gradually, over the last two years he has dedicated himself to bottle glass, a common material which gives me a strong visual feeling of jade, his cultural origin. By experimenting, he tried to explore the potential possibilities of the material, investigated his own way of treating the material.
Jewelry to him is not only something with aesthetic value, making jewelry brings him a new way to discover the surroundings, gives him more possibilities to express his understanding of life. He tries to discover all the aspects of human beings, such as Feelings, emotions, culture, beliefs…all these elements are inspirations of his work.
